Millsy here again with a small taste of what to expect this coming weekend when the Lions try to redeem themselves in the front office and try to put together some peices that will one day make us a contender. This mock is not what I want from the Lions because I see Aaron curry as the only worthy football player to picked number 1 but doubt he will, so this is what i think will happen. Enjoy
1. Detroit Lions: Matt Stafford, QB - Georiga
Many say he Lions need their QB of the future and I dont disagree with that. However i dont see Stafford as that guy. We need to put something together that resembles an NFL team before getting a QB. Culpepper has dropped 30 lbs since the end of the season and is the best shape since 2004 before blowing out his knees. I would rather count on him for a year or two but it looks like Stafford will be the heir to the position, along with his $40 million garunteed.
2. St Louis: Jason Smith, OT - Baylor
I am not sold on Smith either. He is a converted TE but I think he needs to put on another 30lbs to be a legit NFL LT but since the let Pancake Pace go hey need someone to play LT.
3. Kansas City Cheifs: Aaron Curry, LB - Wake Forest
KC needs alot of things so they take the best player available in the draft. CUrry will fit in nicely next to Derrick Johnson on the outside of their new 3-4 D.
4. Seattle: Mark Sanchez, QB - USC
I am not a fan of Sanchez either but it looks as though the Hawks are. Hasselbeck is getting old and injury prone so a replacement for the future makes sense. However, I think Crabtree would be a better pick because their team is getting old and winning now should be their goal. If haselbeck has a wr to throw to and they stay healthy, they could be contenders now.
5. Cleveland Browns: Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB - Texas
Some think they will gor with BJ Raji but getting pressure on the QB is their biggest problem. Orakpo can do that and has the speed to make the move to the 3-4 OLB spot.
6. Cinncinati Bengals: Eugene Monroe, OT - Virginia
Carson palmer needs to stay on his feet if they want him to be succesful. An OT will also help cedric benson or Chris perry or whichever 1st round budst they have in their backfield try to make something of their career.
7. Oakland Raiders: Michael Crabtree, WR - Texas Tech
Al Davis likes athletic freaks. Crabtree is by no means a calvin Johnson type prospect, but if he dosnt give jamarcus russell a couple tools, he will be the next Alex Smith before we know it.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
Smith was a top 3 prospect before flaking out at the combine and multiple other problems. He falls hee to the Jags who need to move Kahlif Barnes to LG and put a real LT at the end.
9. Green Bay Packers: BJ Raji, NT - Boston College
The Pack are making the switch to the 3-4 D this year and NT isa key position in that system. Raji is by far the best DT/NT prospect in a weak DT class therefore the Pack get their man at 9 to build the d around.
10. San Francisco 49ers: Tyson Jackson, DE - LSU
Jackson is the best 3-4 DE available and the 9ers need pretty much anything to help them against the run and Jackson is stout in that department. This will also help keep lineman off of Willis so he can make plays.
11. Buffaloe Bills: Michael Oher, OT - Mississippi
The Bills just traded Pro Bowl LT Jason peters to the eagles and that left a big hole. Oher is my favorite first round OT prospect physically but he has questions with his desire. The risk is worth the reward and the bills win with Ohe falling.
12. Denver Broncos: Rey Maualuga, MLB - USC
Denver is also making the switch to the 3-4 this year and need some LB help. Other than DJ Williams they have nothing and even he may be a little small to play LB in the 3-4 so rey fills a big hole.
13. Washington Redskins: Everette Brown, DE - Florida State
The skins havent had a pass rusher in quite some time. brown will bring his 14 sacks to Washington and hopefully do what they expected jason taylor to do last year. Brown's job will also be made easier by the signing of Albert haynseworth.
14. New Orleans Saints: Vonte Davis, CB - Illinois
The saints always seem to struggle at the CB position. Mckenzie is getting old and Porter is coming off of a season ending injury. Porter and Davis though can make a great duo for years to come.
15. Houston Texans: Brian Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss
Travis Johnson never really worked out. Okoye had a sophmore slump, but putting Jerry in the middle with newly aquired Antonio Smith will give the Texans one of if not the best D lines in the league.
16. San Diego Chargers: Clay Mathews, LB - USC
The third USC LB taken in the top 20 goes to a team that is in desperate need of LB upgrades. they were hoping tyson jackson would be here but since he isnt they upgrade their ILB.
17. New York Jets: Josh Freeman, QB - Kansas State
Freeman has all the tools and the size to be dominant but he just isnt what i would consider a 1st round QB. However, the Jets dont like Clemmens and the new coach Rex ryan sees alot of Joe Flacco in freeman.
18. Denver Broncos (from chicago, Jay Cutler): Aaron Maybin, OLB - Penn State
The Broncos again upgrade their front seven. Maybin will be a great OLB in their new 3-4 and give them a legit pass rush.
19. Tampa Bay Bucaneers: William Beatty, OT - UCON
Tampa would like a QB here but none are worthy. So they get another young lineman to try and give some life to their offense. They added kellen Winslow and are hoping cadillac stays healthy this year. To utilize those talent, they will need a big boy at LT to keep DE's out of the backfield.
20 Detroit Lions (from dallas, Roy Williams): Malcolm Jenkins, CB - Ohio State
Detroit has holes up and down their roster but especially on D. Jenkins will be the number 2 this year across from Phillip Buchannon and eventually will become a stud and our legit lockdown CB.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: Kowshon Moreno, RB - Georiga
westbrook is getting older and even more fragile so getting a replacement/backup will give Philly a nice 1 2 punch.
22. Minnasota Vikings: Darius Heyward-Bey, Wr - Maryland
Heyward-Bey ran a rediculous 40 at the combine and has great size. Unfortunately, so did troy Williamson. However, the Vikes still have a solid D, they still ahave AP, and now think that Sage Rosenfals will lead them to the promise land. To do that, he needs another target.
23. New England Patriots: James Laurinaitis, ILB - Ohio State
They wanted him last year and he went back to school. this year, they get him and team him up with last years DROY in jerod Mayo and once again the Patriots have a solid LB corp.
24. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Pettigrew, TE - Oklahoma State
Pettigrew has fallen off a little but he is still a great talent. Atlanta will continue tob uild around matt Ryan and he will have a big play guy and they will finally fill the void left by Alge crumpler.
25. Miami Dolphins: Conner Barwin, OLB/DE - Cinncinati
Parcells loves building his defensive front 7. barwin is explosive and will evetually replace the aging Joey porter.
26. Baltimore Ravens: Darius Butler, CB - UCON
The Ravens are aging on D and especially at CB. Butler is a solid man coverage CB and will upgrade the position instantly.
27. Indianapolis Colts: Evander Hood, DT - Mizzou
The Colts have had a revolving door at DT for a few years and finally decide to draft a youngster to fill the position for a while.
28. Buffalo Bills (from Philly, jason Peters)Robert Ayers, DE - Tennessee
The Bills also need to get some pressure on the opposing QB and Ayers is the sleeper DE of the draft. Great value here by the Bills.
29. New York Giants: Hakeem Nicks, Wr - UNC
Losing Plaxico is tough and unless they trade this pick for either braylon Edwards or Boldin, Nicks has to be the pick. Harvin is the better talent, but he isnt #1 Wr IMO and has some charachter issues dropping him down draft boards.
30. Tennessee Titans: Ron Brace, DT - Boston college
Losing Big Al is a huge loss and they need to fill the hole. They could go a few other places here like Harvin, but keeping their D atop the league is more important IMO.
31. Arizona Cardinals: Beanie Wells, RB - Ohio State
Edge is old and losing a step so getting a fresh face back there will help take some pressure off of Warner.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alphonso Smith, CB - Wake Forest
They need O line help but that can be found later. Replacing McFadden is the first step in continuing their dominance of the AFC.
Bonus:
33. Detroit Lions: Alex Mack, C/OG - California
The Lions need to upgrade the interior of the line moreso than the OT's IMO. Mack will step in at LG and then will replace Raiola in a couple years when his contract is up.
