Big Phil got his first loss of the challenge and I correctly picked MTSU so we are now both 2-1 but he is still 6 points ahead of me

Bowl Pick em

I will try and blog as much as possible during the bowl season to keep you updated on the status of my new and improved college football equation. I will also be comparing my results to Big Phil's picks. His picks were done by flipping a coin to decide the winner of all of the games and then randomly selecting their point value. Through 2 bowl games Big Phil is 2-0 and my equation is 1-1. Big Phil also has accumulated 10 more points than me. I hope to start my comeback today with the New Orleans Bowl. My equation selected Middle Tennessee State to win for 4 points and Big Phil selected Southern Mississippi for 32 points. Just because it is that time of year and I am in a giving mood, I will give Big Phil $1000 if he picks all 34games correctly. He is the only one left out of 23 to not have incorrectly picked a game.

Enjoy the bowl season!! Holla!!

Granderson/Jackson trade comparison

The numbers are in and it looks as if D-squared traded away a superior offensive player in return for a slightly inferior offensive player. In 2009, Grandy had a TB/out ratio of 0.75, which is a pretty strong performance. The centerpiece that the Tabs got in return was Austin Jackson. In 2009, playing the entire season in triple-A, Jackson posted a 0.69. This also is a strong but not spectacular year. The good news is triple-A numbers tend to translate fairly well to the major leagues. The bad news is that it looks as if the Tigers traded away a better offensive player. But the value tells us differently as Granderson was paid $3.5 million for his offensive output while Austin Jackson was almost playing for free in the minors so let's pretend he was a lucky fellow and making the Major League minimum of $400,000. When the numbers are translated out CG produced 0.21 TB/out per $1 million earned and Jackson delivered 1.74 TB/out per $1 million earned. This tells us that the Tabs were able to get the better value out of this trade. A lot more was involved in this trade on top of that but this gives us a little something to think about while judging the transaction.

Mythical National Championship Tournament Final

The championship game is set!! The University of Texas Longhorns will be taking on the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs in an all-Texas battle for the mythical national championship. I'm pulling for the Horned Frogs even though I am supposed to be unbiased.

Very sad news out of the D today as Grandy was traded to the pinstripes. I actually thought it was a move we had to do to remain competitive for the future. I will try and post TB/out totals for CG and Austin Jackson, the dude we got from the Yankees for Curtis.

Other notes of interest:

1) I will be posting my 2009 bowl projection formula online in the next 2 weeks and possibly my actual bowl projections.
2) Live blogging from the Pistons game and bachelor party this Saturday. I expect a full slate of knees on bows and gypsie hips to go down.
3) I also want to take a look at how accurate the Pomeroy Rankings predict NCAA hoops games.

So far so good. Penn State defeated Virginia to give the Big 10 a 1-0 lead in the Big 10/ACC Challenge. Hopefully this will be the year the Big 10 finally wins.
